September 6, 2019: Disney’s ‘Mermaid’ helped woman with autism find her voice, The San Diego Union Tribune

“In Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” a mermaid gives up her voice to become part of the human world. But for Katrina Aguilar, a professional singer on the autism spectrum, “The Little Mermaid” gave the Rancho Peñasquitos resident not only her voice but the career of her dreams.

Aguilar was nonverbal when she was initially diagnosed with low-functioning autism at age 4. I have accompanied Katrina Aguilar a few times over the past two years. I’ve always marveled at how professional and instinctive she is as a performer. She has a terrific voice, and she takes the time to really make everything she sings resonate with the listener, not just as a good song, but as a method of moving the audience. I look forward to seeing what she comes up with in the future.

Katrina is a surprise. Bold, daring and deeply personal, Katrina performs with a verve rarely seen onstage. Rather unassuming at the start, she starts to grab us and tells her story while bringing us to the edge of our seat. She inspires in ways in I didn't think possible. I was transfixed at the end. Thank you, Katrina, for taking me on a profoundly moving journey into your world.
